Artist statement
As a woman with a tri- cultural background, born in the Netherlands, I experience daily the struggles of being a tri cultural woman. This resulted in my interest in the counter-narratives that exist about women and bi/tri cultural women’s experiences, who fall between the existing categories of ethnicity, culture and race. Their presence is underexposed within society and therefore I am trying to work towards a safer, more inclusive and kinder world. Although I recognize the struggles that exist, I am exploring possibilities to create a world for all women without sexualization, where acceptance, self-confidence, and freedom thrive.
In my work, I dive into the essence of womanhood across my own diverse cultural backgrounds. On canvas, I craft varied representations of women in a playful and warm manner. Through dynamic imagery, my pieces come to life with movement; shapes emerge and fade away, inviting a sense of fluidity and change. The bodies are playful, imperfect, energetic and vulnerable. My color palette gives a glimpse into my own cultural background. I invite the audience to perceive women in a new light, ensuring that the women depicted on canvas occupy the space they rightfully deserve. My aim is to allow room for the viewer's gaze, fostering identification and inspiration.
Ambitions
Continuing with painting, apply for a lot of residencies and maybe even try out painting in combination with installation.
Learned during the studies
Realizing that I had time to create and broaden my artistic language & practice. And the ability to create a big network.
